In this scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the opportunity for 300 units of free electricity will be provided to 1 crore houses of Indian citizens, which is going to provide facilities to many more people.
This scheme has been started under the National Electricity Policy. It is a public welfare scheme by the Government of India which aims to relieve about one crore households in the country from expensive electricity bills.
Know 300 Units of free Electricity for Houses
More than 1 crore people have registered under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme for less than Rs 83 per month. The Prime Minister has provided this information on social media platform X.
Under this scheme, 1 crore households will receive 300-300 units of free electricity. PM Narendra Modi launched this scheme on February 13, 2024.
Additionally, under this scheme, 1 crore families who install rooftop solar panels will also receive an annual income of Rs 15 thousand.
What is the Cost of Solar Plant Setup?
Under this scheme, 60% of the cost of solar plants up to 2 KW for every family will be subsidized. Additionally, if someone wants to install a 3 KW plant, they will receive a 40% subsidy on the additional 1 KW plant.
Setting up a 3 KW plant will approximately cost Rs 1.45 lakh. Out of this amount, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs 78,000. The remaining Rs 67,000 can be covered through a low-interest bank loan facilitated by the government. Banks will only be permitted to charge interest rates 0.5% higher than the repo rate.
What are the Requirements to Set up a Solar Power Plant?
The government has introduced a national portal for the scheme. To initiate the installation process, individuals can apply by accessing the consumer portal. Here, they will need to provide details such as their consumer number, name, address, and desired plant capacity.
DISCOM companies will verify these details and proceed with the process. Numerous vendors are already registered on the portal to install solar panels. Individuals can select any vendor according to their preference. Once the panels are installed, the DISCOM will proceed with the installation of net metering.
How does Solar Panel Subsidy Work?
Once the solar plant installation is completed and the DISCOM has installed net metering, the proof and certificate of installation will be uploaded onto the portal.
Following this step, the government will transfer the full subsidy amount through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the consumer’s account.
Will 300 units of Electricity be Available Free in this Scheme?
1 KW solar plant generates about 4-5 units of electricity daily. In such a situation, if you install a 3 KW plant, then about 15 units of electricity will be generated daily. That means 450 units a month.
You can use this electricity, the remaining electricity will go back through net metering and you will also get money for this electricity. The government says that you can earn around Rs 15,000 in a year from this electricity.
